Originally was used to store a bride's meal on her wedding day - custom required her to change clothes for each course, so she'd wind up missing all the food. She'd get her meal after the whole thing was over - some would call it an inefficient system, but at least someone was thinking of the poor girl. Good idea for a bridal shower gift when you can't possibly look at another set of towels.
